Arqiva Microwave Link Rollout
Expanding DAB radio services for all our enjoyment.
Arqiva is a communications infrastructure and media services company operating at the heart of the broadcast, satellite and mobile communications markets. Arqiva provides much of the infrastructure behind television, radio, satellite and wireless communications in the UK, including Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB) radio services. As part of the expansion of DAB radio services, additional transmitter sites are required and the programme feed to these sites is provided by a network of microwave links. Principal Telecom provides full rollout services for the deployment of this network.
We carry out an initial Line of Sight (LoS) and tower survey to assess the feasibility of the proposed link. Once verified and the link (budget and frequency) has been planned a Pre-Installation Visit (PIV) is carried out to determine the specific requirements of each end of the link and from this we order all of the necessary equipment. We design and supply the required interface steelwork, for example pole mounts and face frames.
The radio equipment is bench tested and pre-staged at our Barnsley depot before shipment to site. Once on site, the field teams install the racks, batteries, rectifiers and indoor radio equipment at ground level; and the antennas and baseband cables at height in the tower. The link is then commissioned and made ready to carry live network traffic, handover documentation completed and handed over to Arqiva network operations.
There is an initial programme of c.100 links across the whole of the UK.
