BT LoS

Case Study:
Delivering over 1,500 Line-of-Sight (LoS) surveys UK wide

Project Overview:
With the ever increasing demand for mobile data and new 4G services, Mobile Network Operator MBNL (for EE and 3) are increasing their backhaul transmission bandwidth by installing new microwave link technology.

Telecommunications giant BT provides a managed service to MBNL for all of their backhaul requirements including the roll-out of new, and upgrades to, existing microwave links.

Microwave technology only works if there is clear, unobstructed visibility between the two ends of the link, called line-of- Sight (LoS). The network design process requires that LoS is confirmed at the proposed site locations and in the event that there is an obstruction, provide the location or route diversion for suitable alternatives.

After a tendering process and subsequent negotiations, Principal Telecom was successful in securing a contract with BT for the provision of LoS services on over 1,500 links in 2 years.

Accessing remote sites using 4 x 4 vehicles, MEWPS for street works and safe climbing techniques for rooftops and towers, the Principal Telecom LoS team uses state of the art high powered lamps and high resolution photographic equipment to confirm LoS across distances from tens of metres in city centres and up to 40km in rural areas.
